Bank Holiday Monday 26th May

About this event

On this late May Bank Holiday Monday, Join one of the factory’s original founders, Alfred Newman, back from 1894 for a tour like no other. Not that a Victorian factory owner would have been too keen on the establishment of bank holidays, but it was of their era’s inventions too.

Be welcomed by Alfred Newman as he tours you around his state-of-art (for Victorian times) factory which opened in 1894. The Coffin Works preserves the contents of the former Newman Brothers’ manufactory, which finally closed its doors in 1998. The shelves and workbenches are full of original stock and tools of the trade.

With the original machinery working, you can truly experience how this old Jewellery Quarter firm once operated on a day-to-day basis and find out its stories from one of the Newman Brothers. The firm produced some of the world’s finest coffin furniture, including the fittings for the funerals of Winston Churchill, the Queen Mother and Princess Diana.

The tour will last around an hour and a quarter starting at 11am…don’t be late (as you’ll have your wages docked!).
