About this event

As part of our ‘Stepping Through The Past’ collaboration with Ian Braisby, join on our More Than Just Jewellery Walking Tour to learn about the hidden history of the Quarter.

A Jewellery Quarter tour with a difference! While Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter is a very special place as a surviving historic manufacturing district, we will be looking beyond the usual history of jewellery making to uncover some fascinating tales of people and events linked to the area. From private lives of great manufacturers, to the Quarter’s role in politics and policing, to the fascinating stories of everyday working people, we’ll discover that there is much, much more to this popular part of the city than just the manufacturing that gave it its name.

Following the walking tour, you’ll receive a tour of the preserved manufactory of just one of those thousand trades: coffin furniture. Discovering how this Victorian factory developed into the world-class business it became, even supplying the royal undertakers with coffin handles, ornaments and shrouds for the best part of a century.

This package tour includes:
1pm – 3pm, Jewellery Quarter Walking Tour [Meet outside Jewellery Quarter railway station, on Vyse Street]

3pm – 3.30pm, Cuppa and cake in the Coffin Works’ Casting Shop Cafe [A hot/cold drink and a cake included per ticket]
3.30pm – 4.45pm, A full guided tour of the Coffin Works itself
