History

This backplate is ‘tin-dipped’ which refers to nickel-plated tin. It is Registered Design No: 375785.

Tin was one of the cheaper materials used at Newman Brothers. Backplates were not standard coffins features, they were available to offer a more ornamental finish. The handle would be placed over the backplate.

This backplate shows an Art Nouveau influence. Art Nouveau designs were inspired by natural forms and structures, particularly the curved lines of plants and flowers. This style was quite popular between 1890 and 1910.
