Gateway Object: Brass Back Plate

Brass flower shaped backplate

Production

This stamped brass backplate, (sometimes called a ‘grip plate’) is Neo-Gothic in design and dates from circa 1900. It was designed to be part of a set, a ‘ring handle’ would be attached to it.

This is a stamped brass product, which made it a cheaper alternative to cast brass ornaments. To create it sheets of brass were stamped and then polished to achieve a highly-burnished finish.
